Brother's affordably priced serger 1034D is recommended as a fine way to expand your sewing repertoire to include overlock sewing. Although not the sturdiest model on the market, it certainly performs better than we expected considering its attractive price.
Most users are impressed with the ease in which this machine threads. Color coding makes it easy to follow the lay-in threading pattern. Packed in the box is a helpful tool that aids in threading the lower looper--the trickiest part to thread on almost any machine.
Equipped with a free arm/flat bed convertible sewing surface, this model works as well on large flat projects as it does on small ones with curved seams. A 3/4 thread machine, this model can be threaded with three or four spools. It then sews, finishes, and trims the seam professionally in one step.
Unlike many models in this price range, the 1034D offers a differential feed, which can be adjusted with a convenient knob for smooth sewing on thin, stretchy, and knitted fabrics. A rolled hem can also be applied instantly, without the need to add an attachment. The result was acceptable to all but a few of the pickiest seamstresses.
Accessories include five different feet, a fairly good manual, and a helpful video to get you started.
Unlike many more sophisticated models, the Brother 1034D is quite easy to use. As a result, this is one of the few machines we're comfortable buying from a discounter, an online retailer, or another source that lacks a support staff.
Pros: Easy to operate, helpful manual and video included, has a differential feed, attractively priced
Cons: Not the most durable, prone to vibration
Cons: Not the most durable, prone to vibration
