Hemming Tips

The finishing off when sewing an outfit is so very important. Those final steps to making your garment look professional not home made, are well worth the extra effort and gaining the knowledge as to how to do it and taking the time to practise how to do it.

Many an outfit has been spoilt by not having the hemming sit nicely. Like most things with sewing, it is in the little techniques that your sewing pattern will not have instructions for.

Serger

Techniques like the one I am about to reveal to you are usually learnt from professional sewing instructors but now always. Mostly, I learnt all mine from my Mum who learnt them from her Mum and so my daughter has learnt them from me..

Hemming Tips

This hemming tip is so important as a badly sewn hem can ruin a garment. like everything, once you learn the right way to do something, it becomes much easier.

Now here are the tips when hemming your garment. The hem finish can "make or break" a garment.

Here is how to 'make' a garment with the all important 'get it right hemming technique'.

When turning up a hem on the bottom of a shirt, normally the instructions will say to turn up ¼' double, depending on your fabric, this could be too bulky. If you have an overlocker/serger, then overlock the raw edge and turn up once. No bulk.

When your hem is wider at the turn up than where it will be sewn in place, often times there will be too much fullness to get a nice even hem to sew.

To avoid any puckering, where your ¼" turn under is, run a row of stitching, if you loosen your tension a little, this could be enough to "ease" the fullness out, but in case it isn't what you do is:-

Pin at your side seams, front and back centers and then taking a pin, slip it under a stitch in the center between each pin and pull up until the hem fits evenly between each section. Pin the hem in place and finish by hand or machine whichever method the pattern calls for.

Use this tip for all the hemming on your garment, sleeves, jackets, skirts anywhere you need to hems.
